Two Twin Cities women wanted to wear fashionable clothing that was “good for people and the environment,” but couldn’t find a wide selection in local stores—so they built one.
At Birch Clothing, Marti Markus and Ellen Gavin’s well-edited selection of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories is made from fairly traded, environmentally friendly fabrics. Their small boutique sits in a charming neighborhood of Southwest Minneapolis and their socially conscious merchandise reflects the attitude of the neighborhood. Their hand-picked, bohemian clothing is made from natural fibers, including hemp, silk, tencel and organic cotton. The hot item for women right now is the button-down (made from natural stone) Jacqueline blouse by Earth Speaks—great for going from day to evening. Gift-buying is easy with the wide selection of handbags, scarves, wallets and hats.
Located at the corner of 50th St. and Penn Ave., 612-436-0776.
